ERA provided Structural Engineer of Record services and steel connection design for a significant expansion and renovation project at the University of Minnesota, focusing on the Institute of Childhood Development.

This comprehensive project involved the design of a new 40,000 sf building and the structural repair and modification of an existing 30,000 sf facility. The new structure showcased ERA’s ability to tackle complex architectural features. Working closely with the design team, ERA engineered solutions for long cantilevered slab edges, monumental stairs traversing large slab openings, and intricate geometries that necessitated unconventional member sizing and framing configurations. These elements not only met the functional requirements of the institute but also contributed to the building’s distinctive aesthetic. The renovation aspect of the project presented unique challenges due to the existing structure’s composition. The original building featured cast iron columns and beams encased in concrete, with reinforced concrete slabs. ERA’s expertise in historic structural systems was crucial in developing thoughtful detailing to seamlessly connect new structural elements to the existing framework. This approach ensured the integrity of the original structure while accommodating modern needs and safety standards.
