ERA provided structural engineering services for the U.S. Courthouse in downtown Minneapolis, MN.

Standing 30 stories tall, this impressive facility features a modern steel-frame structure with a stone-faced exterior. The building’s distinctive design includes a twelve-story curved exterior wall and security measures featuring specialized bollard and drumlin systems to protect against potential vehicular attacks. Following a national design-build competition, the project was awarded to a team including Kohn, Pedersen and Fox of New York and Alliance. The north elevation’s curved wall maximizes views of the Mississippi River from judges’ offices, while sloped perimeter columns provide unobstructed sightlines and maximize floor space. The front elevation curves horizontally to acknowledge the classic structure of City Hall and its clock tower and features a challenging eyebrow element with a slender, cantilevered design. Completed in 1997, the U.S. Courthouse serves as home to both the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts, combining functional judicial spaces with distinctive architectural elements.
