ERA provided structural engineering services for the expansion of the Minnehaha County Jail in Sioux Falls, SD, a project designed to meet current and future capacity needs while maintaining operational efficiency.

Working in collaboration with JLG Architects (Architect of Record) and BWBR (Secure Environments Design Architect), ERA contributed to the design of this 90,000 sf addition to the existing facility. The expansion, constructed entirely of precast concrete, increased the jail’s capacity by 320 beds, bringing the total bed count to 720. ERA’s structural design not only accommodated this significant increase in capacity but also facilitated the relocation and enhancement of crucial support spaces. A key challenge of this project was maintaining the day-to-day operations of the existing jail throughout the construction process. The team ensured minimal disruption to ongoing activities while integrating new structures with existing facilities. By utilizing an all-precast structure, the project benefited from the efficiency and durability of precast concrete construction, aligning with the need for robust, secure, and long-lasting correctional facilities.
