ERA provided structural engineering services for the conversion of a historic warehouse into the Hewing Hotel, a distinctive landmark in Minneapolis’ North Loop.

Originally constructed in 1897 as a farm implement warehouse, this 93,000 sf building was transformed into a 124-room boutique hotel, opening in 2016. The project showcased ERA’s expertise in adaptive reuse and historic preservation, involving complex structural interventions such as installing transfer beams, adding an elevator shaft with micropyle foundation, reinforcing floors for new uses, and constructing a new steel-framed sixth floor. ERA’s work preserved the building’s original character, including exposed heavy-timber construction and brick walls, while adapting it to modern hotel requirements. The design maintained distinctive features like broad storefront windows, exposed steel beams, and brick bearing walls with arched windows. Completed at an estimated cost of $31 million, the Hewing Hotel project demonstrates ERA’s ability to blend modern structural needs with historic preservation, creating a unique venue that honors its industrial past.
