ERA provided structural engineering services for the expansion of the Vietnamese Buddhist Association of Minnesota Chua Phat An Temple in Roseville, MN.

This complex project involved creating a new entry and Buddha Hall while integrating with three existing structures. The design presented unique challenges as the new temple was carefully inserted between two single-story buildings and one two-story structure, each with different floor elevations. The project required innovative structural solutions, including soil stabilization to support existing buildings when the new basement construction undermined their footings. ERA’s design featured exposed Glulam columns and beams in the main temple, creating a dramatic high-ceiling space that honors Buddhist architectural traditions. The height differential between new and existing structures necessitated careful consideration of snow drift loads on existing roofs. Working with limited documentation of the existing structures, ERA’s expertise ensured precise coordination between new and existing construction elements. This project demonstrates ERA’s ability to solve complex structural challenges while respecting the unique architectural requirements of religious and cultural facilities.
