ERA provided structural engineering services for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Be The Match headquarters building near Target Field in downtown Minneapolis, MN.

The headquarters facility allowed NMDP to consolidate operations into one central hub and helps NMDP achieve the vision of creating a world where every patient can receive life-saving cell therapy. The 250,000 sf building houses 900 employees and consists of 7 levels of composite steel framing plus a 1-story basement for parking. Much of the rooftop contains air handling units that serve the building, with a screen wall provided on all 4 sides to shield the mechanical units from the view of adjacent buildings. The building is supported on pile caps with steel pipe piles extending 90 ft through the fill, rubble, and sediment layers common in North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis. To eliminate the need for a structured slab at the basement, geopiers were used to stiffen the soil enough so that a standard 5″ slab on grade could be used for the basement parking, saving the project time and money. The project’s excellence was recognized with multiple awards, including Office Transaction of the Year from the Minnesota Commercial Association of Real Estate (MNCAR) in 2014 and NAIOP Office Build-to-suit in 2016. The successful delivery of this significant headquarters project involved collaboration with United Properties as developer, RSP Architects for design, Perkins + Will for interiors, and RJM Construction as general contractor.
