ERA provided structural engineering services for the Federated Insurance Data Center Addition in Owatonna, MN, adjacent to their existing South Campus facility.

This uniquely engineered structure was designed to withstand F5 tornado forces with winds up to 318 miles per hour, while serving dual purposes as both a data center and emergency storm shelter for employees. The two-story building strategically houses IT equipment on the upper floor and mechanical equipment on the lower floor. To achieve the exceptional structural resilience required, ERA implemented specialized design elements including enhanced wall panels, reinforced connections, and an innovative roofing system. The facility’s storm shelter capabilities allow all employees to reach safety within seven minutes. Completed in 2013, this project demonstrates ERA’s expertise in designing mission-critical facilities that combine robust structural integrity with essential operational functionality. The project exemplifies ERA’s ability to create structures that protect both vital infrastructure and human life under extreme weather conditions.
