ERA provided structural engineering services for Children’s Hospital’s major expansion in Minneapolis, MN, a $116.7 million project completed in October 2010.

The 421,000 sf expansion included several key components while maintaining full hospital operations throughout construction. The Acute Care Children’s Hospital building comprises 139,000 sf across six levels plus a penthouse, featuring both tunnel and skyway connections across Chicago Avenue. The new 780-car parking ramp incorporates two below-grade and five above-grade levels, with provisions for two future levels. Its structural system utilizes conventional post-tensioned slabs, including a specialized 12-inch thick two-way post-tensioned slab at the truck dock. The design accommodates 30-foot retaining walls for below-grade levels and includes transfer girders at the entrance and truck dock. The Chicago Entrance Addition, constructed with composite steel, completes the expansion. Throughout the project, ERA’s structural solutions facilitated seamless integration of new construction with existing hospital operations, ensuring continuous healthcare delivery while expanding facilities for future needs.
